Increased demand for greenkeeper training

8.45am 11th February 2004 - People

Extra training places for greenkeepers in the UK and Ireland have been created by the Greenkeepers Training Committee to meet a surge in demand. The increased interest in the course follows a very busy BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition for the GTC. GTC Education Director, David Golding, declared the exhibition, held in Harrogate last month, a huge success.
“We are pleased to be able to offer more dates for trainer and/or assessor training on the back of the interest we received at BTME,” said David. “This is a clear demonstration that course managers are embracing a much more modern approach to staff training.
“With more and more employers understanding the vocational training system and apprenticeship schemes it is important that course managers, head greenkeepers and in some cases deputies become formally involved in the training and assessment of their staff.”
The courses are run in conjunction with Cheshire-based Plan-It Training. The training days are run at regional centres throughout the UK and Ireland and focus on improving training and assessment skills.
David added: “An important role of senior greenkeepers is to train their greenkeeping teams and assess them against stringent national standards. Workplace training is a far more effective and flexible way of delivering vocational qualifications that focus on skills. Consequently, there has never been a better time to invest in greenkeeper training.”
The dates and venues for trainer and assessor training are:
