The 89th edition of the Farmfoods’ British Par 3 Championship returns to Nailcote Hall in the Midlands next week, where a host of tour professionals from past and present, as well as a cast list of celebrities from the world of screen, stage and sport, will come together to tackle the venue’s renowned 1,048-yard Cromwell Course.
Taking place from August 9-12, the British Par 3 Championship is a long-standing event on the professional golfing calendar, having started out life as The British Professional Short Course Championship in 1933, when it was held in Torquay.
The inaugural championship was graced by some of the all-time greats, including many past Open Champions such as Alex Herd, Alf Padgham, Ted Ray, JH Taylor and Harry Vardon, while many of today’s leading stars, including Danny Willett and Tommy Fleetwood, graced the tournament before going onto global fame.
This year’s tournament will see its strongest ever line up of female players, with Charley Hull, Lauren Taylor, Amy Boulden and Sophie Powell all due to take part.
The championship, which is organised by Champions UK Plc. has always championed inclusivity, with those with disabilities, all ages, genders, and backgrounds succeeding and making a name for themselves at the event. From the competition’s inspirational first ever disabled player Mike Browne, to the competitions oldest ever winner DJ Russell, to the youngest ever player to compete in the pro-am at just 14, Nick Matthews, the championship has provided a platform for players from all walks of life.
This year’s renewal will once again be hosted by dual major champion Tony Jacklin, while he will be joined by a long list of golfing greats, including 1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie, 1992 Masters winner Ian Woosnam and three-time European Tour winner Peter Baker, who also won the Par 3 Championship in 1998.
Among the celebrities on duty will be former Strictly judge Len Goodman, ex-footballer Matt Le Tissier, singer Brian McFadden, former Olympic athlete Derek Redmond and many more.
Last year’s tournament was won by Andrew Marshall, a two-time PGA EuroPro Tour winner, who scooped the €50,000 first prize with a score of 101 (-7) for 36 holes.
