BBC to air podcast series celebrating The Open Championship

11.02am 10th May 2022 - Media

As part of its coverage ahead of the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews, the BBC is launching a new podcast series that will re-visit memorable moments and stories from past Championships through exclusive interviews with some of the biggest names in golf.

While BBC Radio 5 Live will bring listeners full coverage of the 150th Open Championship from St Andrews between July 14-17, the station is releasing a new podcast series called All About: The Open that will be hosted by BBC golf correspondent Iain Carter and commentator Katherine Downes.

Episode One, which will be released on May 12, will see Iain and Katherine speaking to 2014 Open champion Rory McIlroy. He reflects on his victory at Royal Liverpool and reveals why he thinks he hasn’t won a major since winning the PGA Championship that summer.

Further episodes will be released every Thursday on the “5 Live All About…” podcast feed on BBC Sounds. Episodes will run right up to the beginning of 5 Live and 5 Sports Extra’s full coverage of The Open from St Andrews, which begins on July 14.

Iain Carter said: “The Open is always a very special week – my favourite in any golfing year – but this year is extra special. This is the 150th edition of golf’s oldest and, for me, most prestigious championship. It is fitting that the event is being played on the Old Course in St Andrews, the home of golf, and a magical place for all fans of the sport across the globe. Having attended my first Open back in 1982 and covered every staging this century for BBC Radio, I’m thrilled that we are marking this occasion with our podcast series. It is a privilege to be able to tell some of the stories that have helped make this such an incredible event.

“We will hear exclusively from the likes of Rory McIlroy and defending champion Collin Morikawa, while some of the players who came so close to the Claret Jug tell us of their agonies in striving for the famous trophy, including Adam Scott and Ian Poulter. We also look at how the championship came into being with the first Open in 1860 and examine the greats of the game who have won this iconic title such as Tiger Woods, Seve Ballesteros, Phil Mickelson and Jack Nicklaus.”
