The PGA’s Fall Expo New Product Award has been won by a new regulation golf ball that contains motion-activated LED lights. The ball was introduced by Twilight Tracer LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sun Products based in Minneapolis whose other businesses are Sun Pet Toys and Sun Hockey. All companies manufacture and distribute proprietary lighted technologies to their respective markets.
“This technology breakthrough will revolutionize the golf industry,” said John Gill, owner of Sun Products and developer of the Twilight Tracer golf ball. “We wanted to create a product that has all the characteristics of a professional golf ball in regards to feel, accuracy, distance and conforms to USGA and R&A Rules. Now players throughout the world will be able to enjoy golf hours past sundown.”
Twilight Tracer is a regulation golf ball with an inner core that contains proprietary circuitry, a lithium battery, and two red LED lights that are programmed to flash at a rate of 7.2 flashes per second for a duration time of 5-6 minutes. The proprietary design is motion activated by either striking the ball with your club or dropping the ball from approximately 12 cm. “You can follow the ball from the moment it leaves the club face to its final destination,” Gill said. The remaining layers are made from conventional materials. The final cover material is Surlyn.
Sun Products has been manufacturing inline hockey products (Sun Hockey) and companion pet toys (Sun Pet Toys) for the past 12 years. Now, the high impact lighted technology has been incorporated into a golf ball. “The opportunities are endless in the golf industry,” said Gill. “Twilight golf, night tournaments, driving ranges, miniature golf are just a few opportunities the company is reviewing.”
