VisitScotland has launched a range of marketing promotions aimed at showcasing Scotland’s world-class golf product in the week of The Open

The 131st Open Championship, the largest event on the British golfing calendar, has 156 players competing at Muirfield for a prize purse in excess of £3.8m.

VisitScotland is in attendance at the event hoping to attract attention from the 130,000 visitors expected at the Championship and a worldwide television audience including the USA, Europe, UK and Japan.

As part of their promotional activities at the Open, VisitScotland is working with Perthshire Tourist Board, Perthshire golf courses and the Famous Grouse Experience to offer discounted entry to the attraction as well as reduced golf fees. Visitors to the stand will also have the opportunity to win a golf weekend for two at Crieff Hydro.

This week VisitScotland is also working in conjunction with Virgin Radio on a £70,000 campaign to offer its listeners and Internet users the chance to ‘Swing and Win’ a luxury Scottish golfing break plus two sets of John Letters golf clubs.

The promotion offers a daily prize and can be heard on Virgin’s breakfast show on 1215AM between 6am and 10am or accessed on www.virginradio.co.uk which links to the golf pages on the visitscotland.com site.

There are 6 golfing breaks on offer. They are: Edinburgh and East Lothian, Gleneagles Country, Golf in the Highlands, The Magic of Machrie, St Andrews Bay and Troon Retreat.

VisitScotland’s Active Scotland brand manager, Neen Kelly said: “The Open Championship at Muirfield provides a fantastic opportunity to reinforce and promote Scotland’s credentials as a world class golfing destination to a worldwide audience.

“Golf tourism is a huge market for Scotland contributing over £100 million to the Scottish economy each year. We are confident that the various promotions running this week with our partners will help to build on this market and raise Scotland’s profile as the Home of Golf”.
