Five Costa Brava courses have been recognised within the top half of the Top100golfcourses.co.uk new Iberian top 100 ranking, enhancing the region’s position as one of continental Europe’s best golf travel destinations.
In the fourth edition of Top100golfcourses.co.uk ‘s Spanish classification, PGA Catalunya Resort’s Stadium Course maintains its No.1 position for a third consecutive year, with the venue’s Tour Course following at number 25.
Next, comes Golf Platja de Pals’s 18-hole par-73 at number – a Hawtree timeless classic that’s routed through a dense forest of umbrella pine trees – which is followed closely by Empordá Golf’s two courses – Forest and Links, two well-regarded and contrasting Robert von-Hagge-designed layouts – at numbers 33 and 42 respectively.
Director of Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board, Ramón Ramos, added: “We couldn’t have asked for a better start to 2014. With PGA Catalunya Resort maintaining its status as the best golf course in Spain, these new rankings simply reinforce the region’s prominence as a reputable golf destination with many enjoyable golf courses, each offering different playing experiences and sharply contrasting landscapes.
“Combined with our rich cultural and historical heritage and our world-famous gastronomy, thanks to the iconic El Celler de Can Roca, the world’s best restaurant, Costa Brava provides the ideal mix of ingredients for truly memorable golf breaks.”
To the southeast of Girona, towards the Mediterranean coastline, is one of Top100golfcourses.co.uk unsung Spanish gems, Golf d’Aro at Mas Nou, a Ramon Espinosa design that IS routed atop the GavarresMountains, where golfers can play some good golf and drink in panoramic views across the tourist resort of Platja d’Aro and the Costa Brava coastline beyond.
Other golf courses in Spain’s north-eastern region worthy of a visit include:
- Golf Girona – the only course in Spain sown entirely with Penncross, the highest quality grass for golf
- Club de Golf Costa Brava – one of the region’s oldest golf courses that presents a good test for players of all standards
- Club de Golf Peralada – featuring a luxury hotel and wine spa that offer stunning views of the Pyrenees
- Torremirona Golf Club – provides the ideal challenge for mid-level golfers and wonderful views of the Pyrenees and the bay of Roses
The region also offers an impressive Par 3 course at Gualta – perfect for those looking to perfect their short game or for a quick and pleasant round.
