‘Costa del Golf’

12.10am 21st January 2003 - Travel

The growth of golf tourism to the Costa del Sol has had an important impact on the region’s economic activity, increasing turnover, profits and employment in the tourism sector.

The ‘Costa del Golf’ has seen a spectacular development in the past ten years and now has the greatest concentration of golf courses in Europe. There are more than 40 golf clubs, many with more than one golf course, and many of them are considered among the best in the world.

The signs are that the number of courses will continue to increase as will the number of players who come to the region to enjoy their favourite sport.

Foreign tourists are the ones most attracted to the Costa del Golf with as many as three quarters of all players (76.18 per cent) coming from other countries. This type of tourism brings an average daily revenue of 247 euros, higher than from the ‘beach and sun’ sector.

During the past year the volume of business directly generated by golf tourism in Mà¡laga exceeded 367 million euros while the total effect of tourism (direct and indirect) is estimated at 523 million euros. In addition the satisfying of this demand generates about 8,300 jobs directly and another 6,700 indirectly.
