Assoufid Golf Club, situated close to the vibrant ‘Red City’ of Marrakech, has been voted Africa’s Best New Golf Course 2014, at the inaugural World Golf Awards
The announcement, made at a gala ceremony at Quinta do Lago Resort, Portugal, on Saturday November 15th, comes just a fortnight after the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) announced Marrakech as the 2015 Golf Destination of the Year for Africa & Gulf States.
Assoufid Golf Club is set against the backdrop of North Africa’s snow-capped Atlas Mountains, and is a desert-style par-72 golf course, complete with a luxury golf clubhouse and international-standard dining.
The golf course is a debut design for Scottish PGA professional and former European Tour player, Niall Cameron, and officially opened for play on October 1, 2014.
The eco-friendly course was meticulously designed to be integrated into the existing landscape and to encourage the site’s indigenous flora and fauna to thrive, whilst minimizing water consumption.
Guy Maxwell, Golf Director at Assoufid Golf Club, said: “Winning a World Golf Award so soon after opening underlines the positive impact Assoufid Golf Club is already having in the North Africa and European golf markets.
“Our objective is to provide the finest golfing experience by delivering a beautifully maintained golf course and exceptional levels of service, whilst protecting the integrity of the indigenous natural landscape. It is our hope that Assoufid Golf Club continues to be critically acclaimed as a ‘must-visit’ destination.”
Morocco is among the fastest growing golf destinations in the EMEA region and has set itself the target of having over 40 golf courses throughout the country by 2020, thanks to concerted efforts of both the public and private sectors, under the leadership of His Royal Highness, Prince Moulay Rachid.
Chris Frost, Managing Director, World Golf Awards, said: “We congratulate Assoufid Golf Club for setting a new standard for golf in Marrakech and helping to enhance Morocco’s reputation as one of the most exciting, rapidly emerging, must-visit golf destinations for golfers.”
Assoufid Golf Club forms part of an exquisite 222-hectare development, to include a hospitality component and residences, and offers golfers an excitingly diverse challenge across a rolling desert landscape featuring cacti, palm and olive trees.
The development is situated just 20-minutes from the old town (medina) of vibrant Marrakech – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and a 10-minute drive from the international airport.
