Unisys, the global IT services company, is to extend its agreement as provider of sports scoring technology for The European Tour International Schedule by a further four years until the end of the 2009 season.
Currently in the fifth and final year of the existing agreement, Unisys is responsible for the collection, collation and distribution of scoring information at the majority of events on The European Tour.
Unisys will also become an Official Sponsor of The 2006 Ryder Cup at The K Club, Straffan, Co. Kildare, Ireland, from September 22-24. This involvement will see Unisys providing all the IT infrastructure and support services required to deliver scores and statistical data from the golf course during The Ryder Cup.
With a commitment to golf scoring of over 25 years the company has provided scoring services for The Open Championship, the US Open Championship, US PGA Championship and The 2004 Ryder Cup.
At specified tournaments, scoring data is captured and distributed by Unisys using Intermec 700 handheld devices and an 802.11b wireless network. Unisys has developed blueprints of each golf course, based on previous site surveys, to reduce the wireless network installation period.
The Unisys application, that processes the data, was developed in-house, is written in Microsoft C++ and runs on servers and laptops respectively running Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
The data is provided in real time to television, the Tour’s website, www.europeantour.com and to some 50 terminals around the golf course. As part of the extended Tour agreement, Unisys will continue to be an official website sponsor.
