A fabulous back nine run of four birdies in the last six holes catapulted Two Thumb grip ambassador Matt Wallace to a sensational one-shot victory at the PGA Tour’s Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic.
The 32-year-old Englishman, relying on his Two Thumb Snug Tour 27 putter grip, closed out with a six-under-par final round 66 to secure his maiden PGA Tour victory and his first win in nearly five years.
“I was calm and I was determined, feeling like I had it in me all week. I felt like I was playing some really good golf and that I was going to be up there at the end of the week no matter what,” said Wallace.
“It will be really nice to take a trophy home,” he said. “I haven’t been able to do that for five years and I’ve been wanting to do it for a long time. I get to celebrate with my family and friends and my loved ones. It’s crazy, it hasn’t even sunk in yet.”
Wallace had led after 36 holes but was one back heading into the final day. Birdies on the third, fourth and seventh kept him in contention as he turned in 34, and his back nine birdie blitz left him in the clubhouse with a two-shot lead and a nervous wait.
Højgaard birdied the 17th to make it all to play for coming down the last, but the Dane could only par the 18th and the day and his first PGA Tour win belonged to Wallace with a final score of 19-under.
Wallace finished seventh at last week’s Valspar Championship and his weekend victory earns him a place at the PGA Championship. The win also moved him up to 22nd in the world standings of European qualification, as well as bringing his name to the attention of Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, who has six wildcard picks at his disposal.
