The Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) and Europro Tour Limited (EPT) have today announced the merger of the PGA Mastercard Tour and the Europro Tour to form the PGA Europro Tour for 2002 and onwards.

The PGA Europro Tour will stage sixteen professional golf events in 2002 with a Tour Championship final at Parque da Floresta on the Western Algarve, Portugal in October 2002.

“This new golf tour is a major break through for the development of young golfers throughout the world and particularly in the UK,” said Sandy Jones, chief executive of the PGA. “These young players are the future of the game of professional golf and we must leave no stone unturned to give them the opportunity to compete at the highest level.”

“I am delighted to have the opportunity of working with the PGA in the development of the PGA Europro Tour, the world’s largest developmental tour,” commented Barry Hearn, chairman of the Europro Tour. “We all have a responsibility to encourage and motivate young professionals to ensure golf’s successful future. The PGA Europro Tour will discover the new ‘Tiger Woods’ of golf and give its many members the opportunity to compete in golf’s most exciting new venture.”
