The 2025 G4D season begins on January 11 with the All Abilities Challenge Series in Wellington, New Zealand, while the first European tournament starts just two days later at Pestana Vale da Pinta, Portugal on January 13
These two season-opening events encapsulate the competitive, inclusive and global nature of EDGA badged and approved tournaments.
With a second tournament in the two-leg ‘EDGA Tour Portugal Swing’ held on January 17 at Pestana Gramacho, each Algarve event will feature more than 60 players from a total of 19 nations; with golfers travelling from Japan, Canada and Australia, and 16 European countries, reflecting the truly international flavour on show.
The fields for Portugal are strong, including leading world ranked female ‘Gross’ player Daphne van Houten of the Netherlands, and a previous winner of the G4D Tour Finale in Dubai, Rasmus Lia of Sweden. But reflecting the inclusive nature of G4D, there are also three divisions in which to compete: Gross, Net, and Stableford, a signature of EDGA tournaments to encourage golfers to compete with any impairment – physical, neurological, sensory or intellectual.
Known for its welcoming and social atmosphere, this ethos of the Portugal Swing is often mirrored in the 100-plus G4D events worldwide staged, badged or supported by EDGA, the acknowledged international experts on golf for the disabled. This body advises The R&A, the International Golf Federation (IGF) and the European Golf Association (EGA) on G4D, working with 50 national golf federations to welcome golfers with a disability onto the player pathway, whether as ‘samplers’ new to the sport, ‘participants’ or ‘competitors’.
The Portugal Swing has become a hugely popular event on the calendar as not only does it offer a welcome break from the cold weather in the north of Europe, it provides an opportunity for some national teams to view the early season form of their players. This year there will be a series of workshops where Federation representatives can come together to add their voice to the direction of G4D, ask questions, learn about the latest happenings in G4D and network with their colleagues from other countries.
The 2025 G4D season will include key highlights such as The G4D Open in May (staged by The R&A in partnership with the DP World Tour and supported by EDGA), the US Adaptive Open in July (staged by the USGA), and the European Individual Championship in Germany in August, staged by the EGA. In addition, The G4D Tour will present its tournament series in 2025, staged by the DP World Tour.
EDGA President Dr Tony Bennett said: “We are delighted that the 2025 EDGA tournament series will welcome players with diverse golf handicaps to some of the golf world’s best venues, offering them the chance to test themselves against strong fields. These tournaments all aim to excite G4D players as to what can be achieved, while being highly inclusive and always underpinned by the values of friendship and trust.”
Dr Bennett explained that the list of events and host courses (which will be detailed here) is designed to encourage everyone: from a first time challenger in a regional G4D Stableford event, to seasoned competitors pushing their boundaries in international competition.
EDGA’s support from leading audit, tax and consulting firm RSM has enabled the staging of EDGA-RSM tournaments throughout 2025, culminating in the RSM European Play-offs which have been a G4D schedule highlight for the last five years. The Play-offs have become a ‘must play’ target for many players who can qualify to be invited through the World Ranking for Golfers with Disability.
Bennett added: “An important additional element at a number of 2025 G4D events will see the EDGA team working with host venues to prepare their professional staff and volunteers to enable them to deliver sampling sessions for individuals with disabilities pre, during, and post the tournament. It is vital that we work with all the game’s stakeholders to leave a meaningful legacy, and thus help ensure a bright future for all involved with G4D.”
EDGA seeks to change the lives of people with disability through the power of golf. Supporters of EDGA include The R&A, European Tour group, RSM, PING, Srixon, and Ottobock.
