Legendary striker Teddy Sheringham, former Liverpool defender Neil Razor Ruddock, British world champion athlete Kriss Akabusi MBE, and everyone’s favourite former Strictly judge Len Goodman are just some of the exciting names playing at Europe’s most prominent Par 3 event next week.
As well as a showdown for professional players, the event, held at Nailcote Hall near Coventry, now in its 88th year, features a two-day celeb-am where some of the country’s most famous faces go head-to-head at the venue’s notoriously tricky Cromwell Course.
Joining the aforementioned celebs is a whole host of other star names including former BBC sports anchor John Inverdale, Love Island stars Finn Tapp and Nathan Massey, comedian and TV star Jasper Carrott OBE and British Olympian Derek Redmond.
The celeb-am takes place on the Tuesday and Friday of the week’s play and this year’s players will follow in the footsteps of 2019 celeb-am winners, West Ham manager David Moyes and former Manchester United defender David May.
The Championship will of course welcome prominent professional golfers during its professional element. Two-time Major winner Tony Jacklin CBE will return as a virtual host due to travel restrictions, with 1991 Masters’ winner Ian Woosnam OBE, 1999 Open winner Paul Lawrie OBE, 2005 U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell and Italian golfing legend Costantino Rocca all vying for the €50,000 first prize.
Commenting on the Championship, John Hayes, of event organisers Champions UK plc, remarked on the wealth of action and star names set to take to the tee next week.
“We couldn’t have been luckier to have such a plethora of talent to take part in this tournament, especially during a difficult year for all,” said John. “I would like to extend my thanks to all the players, Eric of Farmfoods, and everyone who works so hard to make this special tournament such a success.”
Ian Woosnam OBE, discussed the uniqueness of the tournament in delivering an experience where budding amateurs can team up with the pros: “We feel just as nervous as them! But it is really good fun, of course there is a competitive spirit but we enjoy being able to play the game in a relaxed manner and share tips and advice. It should be an exciting week.”
