The Ladies European Tour has announced that a new European golf tournament will take place in Gothenburg for the first time in ten years. Lycke Golf Club will host the Göteborg Masters from 18-21 September, 2008.
Lycke Golf course, which opened in 2005, is situated near Marstrand north of Gothenburg. The course was designed by Johan Henriksson and the golf pro is Helen Alfredsson, the 2007 European Solheim Cup Captain.
“Lycke Golf Course is a perfect course and I’m delighted to highlight Gothenburg as an excellent place to set up golf events,” said Fredrik Nilsmark, the managing director of the Scandinavian Masters. “During 2008 the Masters Tour will feature European Tour tournaments both for women and men and a Nordic Tour for girls and boys.”
He continued, “The LET has entered into a two year contract with the golf course and the Swedish Golf Federation. The goal is to have one women’s golf tournament in Gothenburg and we therefore hope to have support from players, the market and the golfing public. The turnover is estimated to be SEK 6 million and the prize fund will be €250,000.
Mikael Gyllenhammar, managing director of Golf Engineers AB, added, “We have been considering this idea for a long time and it was not difficult to convince the Masters Tour to support it.
Leif Nilsson from Göteborg & Co, said, “The set up for this tournament will be supported by Göteborg & Co and the LET. We have been planning a tournament in Gothenburg for a long time and we are delighted that it is now a reality. The tournament is totally right for the profile of Gothenburg as an event town.”
Alexandra Armas, executive director of the Ladies European Tour, said, “I’m delighted to announce a new tournament in Sweden for 2008. There is great support and continued interest in women’s golf in the Nordic region, especially in Sweden. I am also delighted to be able to offer our members another opportunity to compete and strengthen the ties with the Masters Tour, which is the official feeder tour of the Ladies European Tour.”
