History will be made when the inaugural Vinpearl DIC Legends Vietnam, the first Legends Tour event to be held in Vietnam, gets under way today [November 30] at Vinpearl Resort Nha Trang.
The tournament is the penultimate stop on the Legends Tour’s 2023 season – with Order of Merit leader Peter Baker looking to secure top honours with time to spare.
Defending Order of Merit winner James Kingston and former US Open champion Michael Campbell are also in the 60-strong field in what represents a final chance to climb the rankings before the climactic MCB Tour Championship Mauritius next month.
The historic event was announced in July alongside a landmark partnership between the Legends Tour and VGS Group Vietnam Global Sport, marking the latest in a long list of innovative schedule additions that have been a staple of the tour since an extensive rebrand in 2020.
On the popular island of Hòn Tre, Baker and his challengers will face a par-71 course which is consistently recognised as one of the nation’s best since opening in 2012. Known for spectacular views and a network of threatening water hazards, the layout promises to be a stern test even for former Major winners and Ryder Cup stars in the field.
Passionate amateur golfers will also have the chance to play alongside the professionals as part of the groundbreaking Alliance Series, with a vast majority being Vietnamese.
Furthermore, in a nod to the heritage and traditions of Vietnam, the champion of the professional event will be presented with a bespoke trophy inspired by the Đông Sơn Bronze Drum, an ancient instrument symbolising national spirit and rich culture.
Phil Harrison, CEO of the Legends Tour, said: “We are delighted to stage an event in Vietnam for the first time and see this as a great opportunity for both the Legends Tour and for Vietnam’s growing golf scene.
“The course at Vinpearl Resort Nha Trang is absolutely stunning and a welcome addition to our schedule, particularly at such a crucial point in the season. We look forward to watching the action unfold and to continuing our relationship with VGS Group Vietnam Global Sport in the years to come.”
