The field for the inaugural Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship, which take place at Trevose Golf & Country Club in June, looks to be taking shape nicely, after it was announced that the tour’s newest recruit, Paul Lawrie, is set to join some of the legends of the game at the stunning Cornish venue.
Lawrie, who turned 50 on January 1, will join other stars of the Staysure Tour for the showpiece event, which is being hosted by fellow major champion Ian Woosnam.
This year marks Lawrie’s debut year on the Staysure Tour, and he is hoping for even more success on the Over-50s circuit, following his impressive career on the main tour, which included eight European Tour wins, two Ryder Cup appearances, and, of course, a famous victory at the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 1999.
Lawrie said: “I can’t wait to play in this year’s Farmfoods Europeans Legends Links Championship. The event looks set to be one of the highlights of this year’s Staysure Tour ,and I’m looking forward to taking on the challenge. Farmfoods is also my personal sponsor, and it is great to see them continue to get involved with golfing events on the tour. With Ian acting as event host, I’m really looking forward to seeing many other high-profile players signing up to play in the Championship in the coming weeks. The fact the event is taking place on a Links course was also a big positive for me. It’s a style of golf I love to play and I’ve heard a lot of positive things about the Trevose course.”
The tournament is being organised by brand agency Champions (UK) plc, and its director of sport, Tim Munton, said: “We are thrilled that Paul Lawrie will be playing at this year’s tournament. He is one of Britain’s biggest golfing stars, and his win at the Open in 1999 has gone down in sporting history. Along with Ian Woosnam as the event host, it is great to have two major champions committed already for the inaugural Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship.”
Head of the Staysure Tour David MacLaren said: “Both Paul and the Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship are making their debut on the Staysure Tour this year, and both additions are sure to provide the tour with a boost. I can’t wait to see Paul in action at Trevose. He is a hugely experienced player who has achieved so much in the game, and the fact he will be taking part in the event demonstrates the high quality of action we expect to see at the event.”
With a total prize fund of €200,000, and a first prize of €50,000, this year’s event is sure to be fiercely competitive. To register for free tickets to watch the tournament, visit at www.europeanlegendslinks.com.
