Greig Hutcheon just became the ninth successive winner on the Legends Tour to use SkyCaddie GPS yardages on his way to victory in last week’s Legends Open De France at Le Touquet.
The 51 year old Scotsman stormed through the field last weekend on his way to an incredible final day 64, including nine birdies, which was a new course record.
His two-shot victory over England’s Simon Khan and Australian Scott Hend was his maiden win on the Legends Tour, in his second season, and leaves him inside the Top Ten on the Order Of Merit.
SkyCaddie users now have won the first nine consecutive eligible events on the Legends Tour so far this season, after Joakim Haeggmann – forever known Sweden’s first Ryder Cup player – won the HSBC India Legends Championship earlier this month with a SkyCaddie GPS on his bag.
Hutcheon, who started the final day four behind the leaders, was effusive in his praise for his SkyCaddie PRO 5X GPS rangefinder.
“I used my SkyCaddie constantly at Le Touquet – my caddie always has it out and ready” he said. “And this week we are playing at Golf Almerimar, where the 18th is a treacherous water hole. The SkyCaddie is great for calculating layups on that hole, which the majority will be looking at.”
He continued: “The PRO 5X is definitely the most precise SkyCaddie I have used yet. It is usually spot on with the laser numbers. I occasionally have a quick zap with a laser, but the SkyCaddie gives you much more info and I trust its yardages.
“The SkyCaddie immediately gives you a layup distance to leave 100 to the pin, or whatever number you want. Or when you’re in trouble and slightly unsighted by trees, it really helps with recovery shots.”
Hutcheon also uses his SkyCaddie frequently when hitting to the green. “We even get the day’s pin placements uploaded to our SkyCaddies, which helps massively.
“For example in Almeria this week the greens are quite spinny so you need to hit 5-10 yards beyond the flag. The SkyCaddie gives me an instant number for that landing area, as well as the exact pin distance. Also, you always need to know your back edge distance of course.
“And with a laser, you must be careful as you can sometimes get a misread if there’s a busy background with trees, or if the reflective device isn’t showing on the pin.”
Like over 70% of Legends Tour players, Hutcheon finds that his SkyCaddie helps him to plot his way around the golf course.
“The SkyCaddie gives you a constant reading from where you are standing, there’s no pacing off from dots. The ease of calculating your yardages is excellent, which makes it easier to discover the distance to certain parts of the course.
“When you need a more precise reading – to the back edge of the green, or to carry a bunker for example – it increases your information levels.
