Glenmuir managing director, Colin Mee, has praised staff at De Vere Slaley Hall for hosting an ‘outstanding’ Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship last week, which was won by Forest Pines’ Daniel Greenwood.
Glenmuir staged its annual Pro-Am at the venue’s Hunting Course on Monday, then saw the cream of Great Britain and Ireland’s golf club PGA professionals compete in its flagship event over four more days.
Later this year the Northumberland venue will stage the prestigious PGA Cup, a biennial competition between the USA and GB&I, and Colin believes it will be the perfect backdrop for the match.
“The quality of the Hunting Course was outstanding and the welcome afforded to Glenmuir, the PGA and the competing professionals by the De Vere staff was absolutely superb,” said Colin.
“Once again the PGA organised a fantastic event and I was delighted to see Dan win. He is such an unassuming professional, but clearly a very good player to win by nine shots and he fully deserves his place in the PGA Cup Team.
“The pros found it tough going, especially when the wind got up, and there is no doubt that both teams will face a real challenge in the PGA Cup in September.”
Glenmuir has been the main sponsor of the PGA Professional Championship for more than 20 years and players competed for a £78,000 prize fund, with Dan picking up £10,000.
Having been top of the leaderboard from the opening day, he produced his best round of the week on the final day as he carded a four-under-par 68 to finish eight-under for the championship.
With victory also came the use of a Peugeot 208 for a year, a place in the 2013 Great Britain & Ireland PGA Cup team and a spot in the end-of-season Titleist PGA Play-Offs in Turkey. He also qualifies for two PGAs of Europe events.
Milford’s David Callaway shot a level par 72 to finish one-over for the championship to claim the runner’s up spot and prize money of £6,280..
Meanwhile, Lucy Williams from Mid-Herts GC cruised to her maiden Glenmuir Women’s PGA Professional Championship title with an 11-shot victory, finishing two-under.
Lucy, whose victory earned her £1,000, is aiming to use the win as a springboard for success on the Ladies European Tour Access Series.
