Iconic golf wear manufacturer Galvin Green has made a significant splash by becoming title sponsors of the PGA Assistants’ Championship as part of a new relationship with the Professional Golfers’ Association.
Title sponsorship of the historic tournament is one element of the three-year agreement between The PGA and Galvin Green, which also includes the Surrey-based company joining the PGA Partner Programme.
The PGA Assistants’ Championship is the PGA’s longest-running national tournament – this will be its 65th staging – having first been competed for in 1930. Past winners include former Ryder Cup captain and two-time major winner Tony Jacklin, legendary TV commentator and eight-time Ryder Cup player Peter Alliss and popular Tour player Barry Lane.
This year’s 54-hole Galvin Green PGA Assistants’ championship will be held at Coventry Golf Club for the second successive year between August 5-7 and will carry a prize fund of £32,500.
More than 400 PGA assistants will tee up at seven regional qualifiers across Great Britain & Ireland in a bid to book their place for a shot at the prestigious title and a chance to win a Galvin Green wardrobe for the remainder of the season.
Sandy Jones, chief executive of the PGA, said: “On behalf of the PGA’s members, I welcome this new relationship with Galvin Green, one of golf’s premier brands.
“This is one of the PGA’s oldest tournaments with great traditions and some wonderful winners, many who went on to have outstanding success in their careers.
“With Galvin Green’s support we will be able to continue that fine tradition and give today’s generation of assistants a great opportunity to put their name in the history books of the Association.”
Mike Johnson-Hill, managing director of Galvin Green UK, said: “Galvin Green is proud to be associated with such a long-standing and valued event and keen to support the younger generation of PGA professionals who are so important to the future of the game.”
