SkyCaddie user Rob Coles took home the Legends Tour’s flagship trophy at the weekend, with victory in the 2024 Staysure PGA Seniors Championship hosted by Colin Montgomerie.
Over four rounds Coles conquered the punishing Trump International Golf Links with a -4 final total for his first Legends Tour victory, narrowly beating 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie by a single shot on the last green.
Both used their SkyCaddies all week, with Lawrie using his new SkyCaddie PRO 5X with his son Craig on the bag.
Coles and Lawrie, along with third place finisher Simon Khan, were the only golfers in the 90-man field to finish under par after a blustery weekend on the beautiful yet unforgiving Trump International course.
“I had to scramble my way around today” said Coles, “it was tough and I leant on my short game heavily. Pars were a good score and we all had to be patient out there.
“Because my SkyCaddie often shows you information which you simply cannot laser to, I use it in every competitive round of golf” said Coles, a 51-year old veteran of over 550 Tour events who qualified for the tournament after victory in May in the 2024 Senior PGA Professional Championship, The PGA’s flagship senior event.
“The SkyCaddie is a key piece of my armoury, it gives you exact yardages instantly, and what they do on the Legends Tour is amazing, including uploading the exact pin distances to your SkyCaddie.”
Coles topped a remarkably distinguished field containing six Major-winners including Lawrie, Michael Campbell, John Daly, Ian Woosnam, Joe Marie Olazabal and Shaun Micheel, plus ex-Ryder Cup Captains Colin Montgomerie and Paul McGinley, and many former Ryder Cup players and multiple European Tour winners such as Peter Baker, Phillip Price, Thomas Levet, Jarmo Sandelin, Joakim Haeggman, David Gilford, Alex Cejka and Niclas Fasth.
17 of the top 20 and ties in last week’s Staysure PGA Seniors Championship use a SkyCaddie, and in total, 75% of the top 60 finishers used SkyCaddie GPS during the week to help them navigate Trump International Golf Links, with its mountainous sand dunes and deep rough creating challenging blind shots and frequent layups, all easily plotted using SkyCaddie’s accurate ground-mapped yardages.
SkyCaddie is the Official Distance Measurement Device of the Legends Tour. The company’s Director of Sales & Operations EMEA, James Holmes, said: “Like so many of the best players on the Legends Tour, Rob Coles uses SkyCaddie technology to help him perform at the highest possible level.
“Time and again, Tour winners are using SkyCaddie, and once again – like in previous seasons – competitors who are using SkyCaddie GPS are dominating the Order Of Merit on this year’s Staysure Tour, with an incredible 18 of the current Top 20 in the OOM using our accurate yardages and shot-saving features such as IntelliGreen Pro and IntelliPath to manage their play.”
SkyCaddie’s official partnership with the Legends Tour Presented By Staysure comes after the firm spent several seasons developing behind-the-scenes relationships with both players and officials on the Tour, proving the technology at dozens of tournaments.
Legends Tour officials now use SkyCaddie’s ground-mapped GPS yardages to create pin sheets when setting each day’s pins, enabling competitors both to download the day’s accurate hole positions onto their SkyCaddies, and also to get a printed pin sheet for the day.
The Legends Tour, formerly known as the European Senior Tour, is the most prestigious professional Tour in the world which allows the use of distance measurement devices during tournament play.
“With over 500 Tour wins between them, the SkyCaddie users on the 2024 Legends Tour know about winning” said James Holmes. “That’s why they insist on having the best information, and we are proud that SkyCaddie technology is proven to provide that at the highest-possible level of accuracy.”
