Former European Tour player Robert Coles scored a playoff victory in the 2024 Senior PGA Professional Championship at Moor Park GC this month, using his SkyCaddie SX550 distance measurement device throughout the tournament.
After shooting a stunning 65 in Round 2, the lowest score of the week, West Ham fan Coles finished in a three-way tie at five under par with David Higgins (Waterville, Co. Kerry) and Stephen Fenn (Littlehampton, West Sussex), and a birdie on the first play-off hole was enough to secure the trophy for the Essex-based golfer.
A veteran of over 550 Tour events, Coles used all of his experience – and his SkyCaddie – to triumph against the colossal 288-man field, which was spread across Moor Park’s High and West Courses for three thrilling tournament days.
The victory means that Coles, who is now playing in his second full season on the Legends Tour (formerly European Senior Tour) qualifies to play in August’s Staysure PGA Seniors Championship at Trump International Golf Links, which has a £500,000 prize fund.
“I use my SkyCaddie in every competitive round of golf” said 51 year old Coles, a triple-winner on the Challenge Tour and a 2-time GB&I PGA Cup player.
“What SkyCaddie does on the Legends Tour and in PGA events is amazing, with the exact pins and the service they give us.
“Off the tee it is invaluable, the SkyCaddie often shows you hazards which you simply cannot laser to, and the instant info you get on runouts, carries and layups is very much appreciated! From the tee you can only aim your laser to a specific point, generally the front of a bunker, but the SkyCaddie tells you where every bunker starts and finishes which helps you plan your tee shot.
“And if you’re hitting to an uphill green, where the flag is blind, the SkyCaddie is especially useful.
“As a tournament player you want as much information as you can have at your disposal, and the SkyCaddie is a key part of my armoury. It gives you exact yardages instantly.”
SkyCaddie’s James Holmes said: “For almost 30 years Rob Coles has been teeing it up in the big events, and to have a player of his enormous experience praising what a SkyCaddie brings to his game is simply priceless for us. We wish him well this season on the Legends Tour!”
