The return of The Open de España to Spain’s north-eastern coast will once again underline Costa Brava’s reputation as one of Europe’s most cultured golf destinations.
All eyes will be on The Stadium Course at PGA Catalunya Resort, near Barcelona – voted Spain’s No.1 golf course – when the tournament returns for the third time, May 15-18, 2014, and the countdown is well underway.
The Open de España is one of the oldest tournaments in continental Europe. It was first played in 1912 and has been part of The European Tour’s schedule since its inception in 1972.
This week, representatives from Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board, the Catalan Tourism Authority and Royal Spanish Golf Federation, as well as other major stakeholders came together in Madrid to officially mark the return of the event to the Costa Brava region.
Real Federación Española de Golf President, Gonzaga Escauriaza, said: “The legacy left by the 2000 and 2009 editions of The Open de España, both held at PGA Catalunya Resort, is unforgettable. These were successful events, not just because of the outstanding golf course and facilities, but also because the city of Girona could showcase the best of what it has to offer – great golf courses, world-famous gastronomy, plus rich heritage and culture.”
Ramón Ramos, Director of the Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board, added: “The return of the tournament means a lot to the region. It creates a great buzz and everybody gets caught in the moment. The golf tourism market in Spain is fiercely competitive, but Costa Brava has successfully built on the unique appeal of its golf courses, numerous sporting and cultural attractions, as well as its world-famous gastronomy.
“Costa Brava is an outstanding golf destination with so much variety and value. Because of its location, our golf courses are part of a sharply contrasting landscape offering unique experiences, stunning views and superb climate.”
Located an hour north of Barcelona and easily accessible from Girona-Costa Brava Airport – an important Ryanair hub – the region is home to many prestigious golf resorts, Michelin-starred restaurants and a wide variety of accommodation, from luxury hotels to farmhouses.
