Edgbaston Golf Club has successfully negotiated a long term, 99 year lease, with Calthorpe Estates to retain control of its city centre golf course and historic clubhouse.

The news has been welcomed by members and staff as it provides a mandate for the future development of the club and its facilities.  The club, which dates back to 1896, moved to its Edgbaston site in 1935. Previously it had operated at Warley Woods and Harborne.

The Edgbaston site is within two miles of Birmingham’s city centre and was once the home of the Calthorpe family and formerly known asEdgbastonParkwith original grounds by Capability Brown. With its 18 hole golf course, designed by Harry Colt, set over 144 acres and magnificent Grade 2 listed building, Edgbaston Golf Club is unique and an asset to the overall cultural appeal of the city’s premier residential and business district.  Over the years Edgbaston has been proud to host such tournaments as the Warwickshire Professionals Strokeplay Championship along with the English Girls Championship.

As Adam Grint, General Manager of Edgbaston Golf Club explained:  “We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to continue occupation of this unique city centre golfing location. Agreeing such a lengthy lease represents an enormous milestone for us and secures the longevity and existence of this premier private members club for future generations.

“In recent years we have invested heavily in the course, introducing a new drainage and irrigation system, which is helping to put Edgbaston on the radar as a winter golf destination for visiting golfers and societies. The greens have never been in better shape and we have a thriving club that continues to attract more players, and in particular juniors and young professionals from the local residential and business community,” he added.

By virtue of its city centre location and magnificent historic setting, Edgbaston Golf Club is also keen to welcome visitors to enjoy its restaurant, conference and wedding facilities too.

In spite of its golfing heritage, Edgbaston Golf Club has remained a best kept secret for years with many golfers being unaware of this city centre treasure.  However, this is all set to change, as securing the future with its new lease of life means that Edgbaston is keen to encourage more people to come and see all that the club has to offer.
