Falmouth Golf Club in Cornwall has been put up for sale for £2.75m after the owner announced his intention to retire.
The golf club was last sold in 2004 when it had a guide price of £1.5m and was bought by David Hughes, who grew up in the West Country.
Since moving into the new clubhouse in November 2021, the business has enjoyed consistent growth in revenue with the accounts for the year ending August 2022 showing a turnover of over £967,000 and sales of the first half of this trading year (September 2022 to February 2023) up £185,000 (49%) on the same period last year.
Formed in 1894, the club currently boasts a 600-strong membership across all categories, with a further 150 social members.
The course offers a challenging mix of parkland and cliff-top holes with views across the bay. The site extends to 94 acres and in addition to the clubhouse there is a professionals’ shop, greenkeepers’ shed, main car park, overflow car park, putting green and short game practice area. A further parcel of land, measuring 14 acres, on the southern boundary part of the course is also part of the sale.
The course itself has seen significant alterations and improvements over the years and earlier this month saw the opening of newly designed 18th hole, which now provides a ‘grandstand finish’ in front of the clubhouse.
Miller Commercial, which is handling the sale, said: “This is a superb opportunity to acquire one if Cornwall’s most popular golf courses and hospitality venues set in an elevated position overlooking Falmouth Bay. The club has undergone numerous improvements in recent years and most notably in 2021 saw the opening of its stunning new clubhouse and restaurant which has been designed to accommodate not only the membership but also a bar, restaurant, functions and events business, with the club being licensed for weddings.”
