HLL Humberts Leisure, the golf property specialist, has been instructed to sell the renowned The Addington Golf Club in Surrey, at a guide price of £7.5 million.
The Addington Golf Club is only 13 miles south of the centre of London and a five minute drive from the busy Croydon train station, but it is truly golf’s secret garden – a hidden world of golfing delights where there are often more foxes and deer on the course than golfers.
Part of the charm of The Addington is the complete seclusion the club provides from the bustling city of London. The layout wanders through thickets of bushy trees like the tight-bending eighth hole, yet still affords expansion views of the metropolis from hilltop tees like that at the fourteenth
The historic Club, which was founded in 1913, comprises an 18 hole 6,338 yard heathland golf course, a traditional single storey clubhouse and a purpose built greenkeepers complex, together with four let residential properties. The Club’s character has been preserved through time and represents the pinnacle of heathland courses in the UK.
The golf course was designed by the revered JF Abercromby, who was one of the founders of the Club and also designed Coombe Hill and Worplesdon Golf Clubs. Abercrombie worked on several courses over the years with Tom Simpson and Herbert Fowler and was one of the giants of English golf course architecture, but he lavished his efforts on The Addington.
The Addington’s signature 13th hole was described by British golf writer and commentator Henry Longhurst as ‘with the exception of the fifth at Pine Valley near Philadelphia, the greatest one-shot hole in inland golf’.
Many visitors are impressed by the “Old World Charm” of both the course and the clubhouse where the traditions of golf are maintained. This does not mean that modern greenkeeping practices do not apply, quite the contrary. The quality of the greens is of the highest, even in winter, and The Addington is ranked by “Golf World” magazine as one of the Top 100 courses in Great Britain and Ireland.
The sale is being handled by Ben Allen fom HLL Humberts Leisure’s Winchester office. Ben Allen said, “Opportunities to acquire golf clubs of such standing as The Addington are few and far between. The Addington is a truly magnificent golf course, which is steeped in history. There has already been a good level of mixed and international interest.”
Tom Marriott of HMH Golf & Leisure is joint agent.
