Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs has appointed Gareth Shaw as County Secretary. PGA Professional Gareth brings a wealth of experience to the role including his most recent position as Membership and Education co-ordinator at the PGA, along with previous roles as Regional Manager and CDO at England Golf and Business Development Manager at golf marketing agency Medi8 Golf.
“I’m born and bred in Staffordshire and have an incredible passion for the local game,” said Gareth upon his appointment. “This is a fantastic opportunity to develop the role of County Secretary. I’m incredibly proud to have been trusted with the development of the game in the region and can’t wait to get started.”
Alongside the traditional County Secretary role, Gareth has been tasked with helping the union develop a defined pathway from grassroots level to elite golf. Drawing on his experience of administration within the game and his PGA Professional qualification, Gareth sees this as the perfect opportunity to bring the union and its clubs closer together to the benefit of all.
He explains, “A priority is to improve the connection between the union and the clubs. I want to support clubs and be a resource that they draw on, but I also want to engage clubs in our shared local golf community and create a clear pathway from club golf into representative honours. I was so proud the first time I turned out for the county, and I want pass on that ambition to local golfers. The scope of the role is huge, but at its heart is building a great relationship between the county and the clubs.”
With an innovative new role and a wealth of experience, Staffordshire Union of Golf Clubs is set to benefit from Gareth’s enormous enthusiasm for the region when he takes post on 11th July. He will be contacting clubs across Staffordshire to book initial visits, however anyone wishing to contact Gareth in advance can email on secretary@staffsgolf.org.uk
