Swedish professional golfer Henrik Stenson, winner of 13 tournaments on the PGA TOUR and European Tour, has announced the debut of Henrik Stenson Golf Design, a global golf course design business. The company will be based out of Orlando, Florida with a European office located in Sweden.
The world No. 7 has engaged Christian Lundin, partner architect at global design practice (re)GOLF, as his lead architect. Lundin is an associate member of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects.
“I have always been fascinated by the layouts and architecture of golf courses and I feel that now is the right time in my career to begin pursuing course design,” said Stenson. “While my main focus remains on playing golf, it will be very important to me to be involved in the details of our designs.”
Henrik Stenson Golf Design has recently contracted its first design project: a 36-hole redevelopment of Österåker Golf Club, located outside Stockholm, Sweden. Österåker Golf Club is an existing 45-hole golf course that is planning a complete makeover during the coming years. Henrik Stenson Golf Design has been carefully selected to execute the entire process.
Henrik commented: “It is absolutely fantastic that my first project will be in my native country! My team and I are honoured and excited to work closely with Österåker Golf Club to elevate the club’s courses to one of the best facilities in Scandinavia.”
Lundin added, “This partnership with Henrik gives us the opportunity to target golf projects in every corner of the globe. Henrik’s experience as a successful professional golfer, combined with his keen interest in the details of golf course design, make him the perfect person to work with. I really look forward to seeing where this partnership can go.”
Later this week Stenson is playing in The Open Championships at St. Andrews.
