Kevin Crossland carded a superb five under par 67 to win the 2014 Foremost Championship at Hadley Wood Golf Club in Hertfordshire.
The head professional from Worksop Golf Club fired a total of 4 birdies and an eagle to claim a three shot victory over Mark Bishop (Toot Hill GC), Jason Levermore (Channels GC), Adam Powell (Hartford GC), Chris Tyrrell (New Forest GC) and 2013 champion David Wood from Orsett Golf Club in Essex.
Crossland won a first prize of £1000 and also secured his place in the Foremost team for the annual Ashworth Cup to be played at Gleneagles in July.
“It was one of those days when it all clicked into place,” said Crossland. “I played well and hit a lot of good putts. It’s great to win the tournament and also to consolidate my place in the Ashworth Cup side.”
This year’s championship was staged in poor weather conditions but that did not stop Brickendon Grange’s Andy Clapp also breaking par with a 71 and Sion Bebb (Morlais Castle GC), Stephen Bennett (Waltham Windmill GC), Ian Burnett (Luffenham Heath GC), Robert Hunter (Malden GC), James Lee (Caerphilly G C) and Guy Wills (Fulford GC) all recording rounds of 72.
The event attracted nearly 100 Foremost members from all over the country.
“I would like to congratulate Kevin for winning this year’s Championship and for playing so well despite the conditions,” said Foremost CEO Paul Hedges.
“The standard of golf was exceptional and that augers well for the annual Ashworth Cup in a couple of months’ time.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank Alistair Archibald, Paul Foster, David Jackson and their team for helping to host a very successful event.”
This year’s Foremost Championship was the precursor for three new Regional Foremost Championships to be played at South Staff GC (Central Region) on May 12th, Pannal GC (North Region) June 9th and The Players Club (South Region) on June 16th. Foremost’s 2014 Ashworth Cup team will be finalised at the conclusion of these events.
