Titleist has released a short film that charts master craftsman Bob Vokey’s journey to creating the specialist range of Spin Milled wedges that have come to dominate the market on the professional tours and at retail over the last 25 years.

Vokey Design Spin Milled wedges make up 56 percent of all gap, sand and lob wedges currently played on the PGA TOUR, while players using Vokey wedges won 30 events on the PGA TOUR in 2024, including three major championships.

Entitled ‘Making the Modern Wedge | Bob Vokey and the Spin Milled Story‘, the film takes viewers inside the creation of Vokey’s very first Spin Milled wedge back in 2001 and the immediate momentum it gained on tour. The performance of Spin Milled wedges was unlike that of any wedge that preceded it, evidenced by the low-flight, high-spin wedge shots that players began hitting with the new grooves.

“You used to play wedge shots, you’d flight it up high and land it in soft,” said Corey Gerrard, Director of Marketing for Vokey Wedges. “All of a sudden, you get a Spin Milled in your hand, it was almost opposite. You would flight the ball in low, penetrating, aggressive ball flight, it takes one big hop and stops next to the pin. It became the shot that everyone wanted to hit, that low one, and it’s still the recipe for a great wedge shot.”

Despite the success and rapid adoption of Spin Milled wedges from tour players and amateurs alike, the journey was not without challenges. The film covers the impact of the 2007 groove rule change, the unique opportunity of servicing hundreds of tour players across the world and the unrelenting drive from Bob Vokey and his team to keep innovating.
