Those who attended the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando in 2020 will be aware of the huge impact CBD is having on the professional and amateur game in the US. The plethora of CBD brands presenting oils, gummies, capsules and even roll-on versions of product demonstrated first-hand that CBD is serious business in the US, and it’s quickly beginning to gain a positive reputation in the UK and Europe, as the ultimate supplement for competitive golf.
For those unfamiliar with CBD, the acronym is short for cannabidiol, which is one of 113 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. Although cannabis can have some negative connotations for its connection to casual drug use, CBD is an entirely different strand of the same plant. The chemical compounds found within CBD can have a number of positive effects on the body and subconscious mind, many of which align perfectly for enhanced performance on the golf course.
Golfer’s CBD have launched an online retail site and, despite the consumer spending being down due to the Covid19 crisis, they have seen increasing demand for the product.
Co-Founder and Commercial Director, Simon Bale, commented: “We’re delighted to bring a product to the market that not only helps golfers to play well, but also alleviates stress and anxiety during these tough and challenging times.
“I knew there was something in this from day one, when my first experience of CBD led to me having a personal best front 9 score in a competition and a handicap cut. I know it sounds like a sales pitch, but this stuff really does work and I wouldn’t spend time and energy bringing a brand to market that I didn’t believe in.
“It’s great to be able to combine my knowledge of golf marketing and the industry contacts I’ve built up to build a B2B and a B2C strategy, as we are now building out our green-grass retail incentive program, which we feel will give on and off course retailers a new revenue stream with decent margins, which will help them fill the hole in their accounts that the Covid19 crisis has left.”
Co-Founder and Operations Director, Andrew Dixon, added: “Many people don’t realise that although this is derived from the same plant as Cannabis, CBD is legal in the UK and there are no restrictions for use by amateur or professional golfers. We ensure our products are made from high quality CBD distillate. There are cheaper alternatives available, but we wanted to produce a premium range, as we know golfers have an eye for quality. We are initially offering 6 products, keeping in mind convenient application on or around the golf course.
“The challenge now is educating golfers and retailers on the product and how it differs to those on the high street. It’s crucial to know what to look out for when buying CBD, as the old policy of buy cheap buy twice is very apparent when there is so much choice and many inferior products on the market.
“To our knowledge, Golfer’s CBD are currently the only golf-specific CBD brand in the UK. We are also at the cutting edge of product development, working with our suppliers to experiment with other legal cannabinoids and their effect on problems for golfers. Research indicates that different cannabinoids can significantly impact issues like the yips and medal day anxiety, so we are very excited about the potential benefits of new products we will add to our range.”
