The Loop publishes first edition of The Journal

New long-form print golf publication launched by leading PR & Marcomms agency

PR & Marcomms agency The Loop has launched a new print publication, The Journal, which brings together 100 pages of editorial featuring some of the best long-form writing in the golf industry across courses, travel, lifestyle and equipment.

Drawing on over 40 years of combined experience across golf journalism, The Loop team have brought their passion for true storytelling together with some of the industry’s most respected writers, complemented by outstanding photography.

Alex Narey, partner at The Loop, said: “The Loop team’s foundation in golf media comes from print, with myself, Mike Harris and Paul O’Hagan all having worked together, for many years, at Golf Monthly magazine. When we launched The Loop we always wanted to do things a little different from other agencies and our ability to create something like this was a key part of that thinking.

“In what is now a digital-first media landscape, we do still believe print can still flourish, and there are many examples – especially in the golf industry – of print titles that are thriving because they cater for a market that still wants to be enlightened and educated with long-form reading.

“There are some wonderful storytellers and writers, not to mention world-class photographers who we have built lasting relationships with over the years, and we believe we are perfectly placed to produce a Journal that people will appreciate with stories that are a million miles away from the regular news grind around global Tours and the superstars who play them.

In Volume 01 of the Journal, Mark Townsend offers a refreshing take on finding some of the best value golf in the UK as he delivers a golfer’s guide to playing a number of stunning links in Northumberland, while The Loop’s very own Paul O’Hagan reveals the joy of a golfing pilgrimage to Perthshire playing alongside his children, with wife and dog in tow. Both features paint a wonderful picture of golf in its most natural format, perhaps as it was always intended to be played.

Experienced golf photographer Kevin Murray’s 16-page pictorial paints the life of a golfing artist behind the lens, searching for the perfect shot across the stunning landscapes of Lofoten Links, Pinehurst No.2, Tobacco Road and Royal Portrush, while writer Dan Davies recounts the story of a US college golf team which emphatically dispelled the theory that college golf is only reserved for the game’s elite. It is a twisting tale of calamity and hilarity, but with a message that should ring in the ears of all who set out to play: Anyone can be bad at golf, but you can still be great when being bad.

Narey adds: “What was exciting when we were commissioning the writers was that the original plan for this first issue continued to change; we started to find features within the original feature that had more of a story to them. There was no set word count, some features went from 1,000 words to 2,000 because the writers had so much to tell. We didn’t want there to be any boundaries.

“In this opening edition, there has been a big focus on golf courses because we are all connected by our love and appreciation for them – from the iconic links that dominate global ranking lists to the hidden gems that rely on people to pay a green fee into an honesty box. Courses are a real passion of The Loop’s and we would like to think that shines through in The Journal.”
