This month marks the 30th anniversary of the launch of Golf News – the UK’s leading free golf magazine.
Started in May 1994 by publisher Matt Nicholson, Golf News continues to celebrate the best of golf in England, as well as reporting on amateur and professional golf events around the UK and the rest of the world.
Speaking about the milestone anniversary, Nicholson said: “It’s hard to believe that three decades have passed by since we first launched Golf News. At the time free magazines were virtually unheard of, and there was nothing for golfers to read beyond the more instruction-orientated paid-for titles. It certainly took time – and a lot of driving around – to convince golf clubs and the wider golf industry that it was a model that would work, but here we are, 30 years later, and the magazine has never been more popular.”
Edited by experienced golf journalist Nick Bayly for the last 22 years, Golf News continues to bring an unrivalled mix of club news, course reviews, exclusive player interviews, equipment reviews, travel features and competitions that has proved such a hit with golfers for the last 30 years.
Bayly said: “The golf media landscape is obviously in a very different place in 2024 to what it was when Matt and I first started out in the business, but we passionately believe that there is still a place for a well-informed mix of news, features, interviews and reviews in our user-friendly, full-colour, A3 print format, which is freely available in the place where golfers are – clubhouses, driving ranges and golf resorts.
“Although I’m not completely oblivious to the excitement generated by the clicks, likes and shares that we receive from our digital content, I still get the biggest thrill from seeing the magazine in print, feeling the paper in my hands, and watching people reading a physical copy. It has a permanence and a visual impact that just can’t be replicated when reading something on a mobile phone or a computer screen, and I hope that is never lost.”
He added: “Golf has experienced a huge uplift in the last few years, with so many new golfers coming into the game, and Golf News is uniquely placed to capture this new and younger audience with it being available at all of the key touch points for golfers.”
With over 45,00 copies printed for each issue, Golf News is certainly reaching a wider audience than ever before, and with a digital version available to read online at www.golfnews.co.uk, and social media feeds followed by thousands of golfers around the world, the title is continuing to provide a valuable multi-media resource for golfers – and the golf industry – to keep on top of the game at all levels.
To mark the 30th anniversary, the print run of the May issue is being boosted to 70,000, ensuring that an even larger number of golfers will be able to get their hands on a copy as the summer golf season fully swings into action.
