Announcement by Centrica and EGU

11.11am 15th August 2003 - Management Topics

Centrica has announced that  it is to transfer Golf England to the English Golf Union (EGU).

Golf England was conceived two years ago as a joint venture between Centrica, the EGU and a technology company to provide a range of golf-related benefits – including a buying group for clubs and a fully integrated smart card for all golfers. The card was designed to: carry a golfer’s handicap as part of a national handicap system; act as an optional credit card; and serve as an affinity card for almost 1 million members.

Whilst nearly 600 clubs joined Golf England, the concept of a voluntary, computerised handicapping scheme proved too complex for club administration, in addition to which many clubs were concerned about an entity other than the EGU gaining commercial advantage from a mandated card. In the interest of English golf, therefore, Centrica plc is transferring the business to the Governing Body for men’s amateur golf in England, the EGU.
