The Legends Tour has released a video that reveals the jaw-dropping trick of the trade which SkyCaddie uses to map golf courses to an accuracy of within a few centimetres.
The video gives an insight into why over three-quarters of Legends Tour players, including Major winners and Ryder Cup stars, now trust SkyCaddie GPS during tournament play.
Called ‘Hard Yards’ it is fronted by an alternative golfing legend, namely Steve Winstone, known as @skycaddiesteve to his many social media followers.
The video, which was produced by the Legends Tour’s in-house creative team, already has over 69,000 views on YouTube.
In it, Winstone shows how ‘ground-mapping’ – which involves walking every hole of every course, using survey-grade technology – produces a level of accuracy far above anything possible by aerial or satellite imagery.
“After doing this for over twenty years, people still cannot seem to grasp that when we say ‘we walk every course’, we actually do mean it” said Winstone, who regularly flies to exotic locations to ensure that SkyCaddie can provide accurate maps for Legends Tour events.
“This new Hard Yards video shows how things like early-morning frost and dew, or dark shadows, can render accurate overhead mapping impossible. You can only create Tour-level accuracy by getting your boots on, and walking every hole from tee to green yourself” he said.
“It has been a massive undertaking over the years, but all this work has made SkyCaddie the most-trusted distance measuring devices in the sport.”
SkyCaddie’s European chief James Holmes is also featured in the video. “If you watch Hard Yards you’ll see why we map the golf courses on foot” he said. “Satellite images just don’t give the information which players need.”
“I’m very proud that the Tour pros place such trust in my work” said Winstone. “I have one of the most unusual jobs in the sport, I will admit, but it is very satisfying to know that Legends Tour players have won dozens of tournaments and several Orders Oo Merit, trusting in the work which I do.”
