Real Club de Golf el Prat is installing solar panels on the roof of its facilities as part of the Spanish venue’s strategic development towards sustainability.
With a total of 574 solar modules, with a power of 260 kW, the new photovoltaic roof will be the largest on a golf course in Catalonia.
The solar panels will start to generate electricity before the end of the year, bringing a saving of 40% and the profitability of the investment will be seen in less than five years thanks to the IBI reduction established by Terrassa City Council.
The photovoltaic project, which was carried out by Chint Energy engineering, was visited by the Consul General of the Peoples Republic of China in Barcelona, Zhu Jingyang, to see the installation first-hand. He was accompanied by the Secretary of Foreign Action of the Generalitat, Gerard Figueras; the CEO of CHINT ENERGY, Luz Ma, and its director, Jordi Cardoner.
The president of RCGP, Pancho Schröder, highlighted that this initiative is included in a “plan that we call sustainable golf, which includes water purification and energy saving, and in this case, with the installation of solar panels, it affects the economic viability and environmental sustainability of the club”.
In recognition of its commitment to sustainability, this past June, Real Club de Golf El Prat gained the Biosphere distinction of the programme, ‘Commitment to Tourism Sustainability Destination Barcelona Biosphere’, a certificate given to those companies that work towards a respectful management of the resources of the environment, as well as delivering social and economic benefits to the city of Barcelona.
Another effort made in the past to produce a more eco-friendly golf course was the investment in a water treatment system to reduce water consumption by improving the purification process through pre-treatment, flow regulation and disinfection of the effluent.
