Women with Disability Participation Report leads to national rollout of The Golf Trust’s ‘Her Power! Her Play’ campaign

The Golf Trust has announced a national rollout of its ‘Her Power! Her Play‘ initiative following the findings of its disability participation survey exploring why women with disabilities are less likely to take part in recreational sport.

Launched in October at Woburn Golf Club, Her Power! Her Play marked the beginning of a five-year project aimed at understanding and addressing the barriers faced by women with disabilities when engaging in sport. The launch event included an inclusive golf taster sessions and a powerful panel discussion featuring women with disabilities sharing their lived experiences and the challenges they have overcome to participate in physical activity.

Participants at the event were invited to complete a detailed survey, the results of which have directly shaped the next phase of the programme.

Key Findings

  • 50% of respondents reported living with multiple disabilities
  • Cost (67%) and fatigue (50%) were the most significant barriers to regular participation
  • The strongest motivator for trying a new activity was access to free or low-cost trials with no barriers
  • 42% cited a lack of disability-aware coaches
  • 42% identified a lack of female-led sessions
  • 25% felt sessions were not always designed to be inclusive
  • 100% said being fit and healthy was a key reason for wanting to take part in sport

In response to these findings, The Golf Trust has developed a new, inclusive and flexible programme designed specifically for women with multiple disabilities. The initiative will offer:

  • Six weeks of free coaching, with a clear pathway to continued participation
  • Delivery at venues where coaches have received relevant disability-awareness training
  • Sessions designed to be inclusive, supportive, and female-led

The first Her Power! Her Play event of 2026 will take place at Cumberwell Park in Wiltshire on March 25 and will be open to women with any type of disability. The event will also feature speakers from the local area, sharing experiences and encouraging long-term engagement in sport. Booking is open here _ herpowerherplaysouthwest.eventbrite.co.uk
