EDGA stages first Player Development Camp at Quinta do Lago

10.36am 30th January 2024 - Growing the Game

Quinta do Lago
has played host to the first ever EDGA Player Development Camp, an initiative created by EDGA to help prepare potential future G4D Tour players.

Held from January 21-25, 12 emerging talents in golf for the disabled (G4D) were able to experience the Portuguese sports and lifestyle resort’s excellent training facilities and golf courses as they were joined by specialists to help them envision what it takes to become a G4D Tour player.

The 12-player group – made up of golfers from ten countries who have yet to play in a G4D Tour or EDGA Professional Tour event – learnt from coaches, nutritionists, performance experts and marketeers as they took part in an intense week of learning.

Those who took part in the camp are the latest in a long-line of aspiring golfers hoping to launch their careers at Quinta do Lago.

Home to three 18-hole championship courses – the North, South and Laranjal – Quinta do Lago has a rich history in helping to develop the talent of tomorrow. The resort has hosted the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship eight times and is a long-term partner of England Golf, with the Algarve resort having regularly hosted the country’s top amateur women, girls and elite boys’ squads for winter training camps.

Sean Moriarty, CEO of Quinta do Lago, said: “When EDGA reached out to us regarding hosting the Player Development Camp, we were more than happy to help. With three 18-hole championship courses and state-of-the-art practice facilities, Quinta do Lago is ideally set up for training camps for all golfers. We hope all those who attended enjoyed the week and will be sure to keep an eye out to see how their careers within the game develop.”

Launched in 2022 by the European Tour Golf and EDGA, the G4D Tour sees golfers with a disability compete on the same course during the same week as the DP World Tour.

EDGA president Tony Bennett said: “Some of the most famous players in the world have graced the fairways of the iconic Quinta do Lago, so where better could we hold the first EDGA player’s development camp. Just as some of the leading professionals in the world launched their careers at Quinta do Lago, we hope that some of the players at the EDGA Player Development Camp will use the experience to accelerate their careers in G4D.”
