APGS 2013: Golf Course Development: Renovation – Is It Time?

11.16am 2nd August 2013 - Exhibitions & Conferences

paulstringer2Remember the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s when Asia went through a boom period in golf course development. This explosion was very evident in Japan and particularly in Southeast Asia where new courses were popping up in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

Many years have since gone by and many of these courses are showing the signs of wear and tear.

Golf courses are special and unique landscapes. A golf course’s beauty and playability are affected by a number of factors. Standard maintenance practices, time and Mother Nature all contribute to the eventual need for renovation or restoration in order to maintain design integrity or to even keep the club competitive in today’s market.

This poses the inevitable question – “Renovation – Is It Time?”

To tackle this topic, the 2013 Asia Pacific Golf Summit has turned to the world’s leading golf course design organisation, Nicklaus Design. And the expert tasked with providing the renovation road-map is Paul Stringer, President, Asia-Pacific, Nicklaus Companies.

“Some hard decisions have to be taken on the need to renovate existing golf courses, looking at possible re-branding, re-design or just improving these golf courses into the best they can be in their competitive environment.”, Stringer explained.

He went on to add, “Many golf courses as you know in Asia were designed in the 70′s, 80′s and even early 90′s and haven’t had much done to them. Just like hotels, houses, or restaurants, and like any business they need some kind of renovation at some point. Determining the “when” and “how” is the critical question.”

This is a presentation that all golf course owners and managers should pay heed to because it is important to understand that, in order to re-capture that special look and feel, the renovation process requires unique attention from experienced professionals.

Whether a simple renovation or a major reconstruction, those who undertake renovation work must possess the skill and experience to restore a golf course to its original charm or achieve a new and exciting concept.

This is a great opportunity to listen to timely advice on golf course renovation.
