Without regulatory change many leisure operators, including golf courses, will lose access to their irrigation water sources.
To help facilitate change, the UK Golf Federation is working with Environment Solutions International to access alternative water as an optional sustainable water source to protect our industry’s future.
The Challenge:
Climate change, population growth, pollution, and water overuse are making water supply less reliable, especially for turf irrigation at leisure facilities like golf courses. Many clubs rely on mains water or abstraction (taking water from rivers or underground), but both sources are under pressure:
- 65% of golf clubs use mains water and may face restrictions due to national water-saving targets.
- Abstraction licences are being reduced or revoked under environmental laws.
The Problem:
Water companies aren’t legally required to supply water for irrigation. Even capturing rainwater or floodwater isn’t straightforward – it’s owned by the Environment Agency and subject to licensing.
What Can Be Done? Here are some practical solutions:
To stay resilient, clubs need to:
- Reduce irrigated areas and water consumption.
- Improve irrigation efficiency and reduce leaks.
- Create on-site water storage (e.g., lagoons or tanks).
- Explore alternative sources like roof/car park runoff or treated wastewater.
- Adapt course management to reduce reliance on irrigation.
Why a Water Charter Matters
The Leisure Operator Water Charter, led by UK Golf Federation, Waterwise, and other national bodies, helps clubs show commitment to sustainable water use and push for regulation changes.
By signing the Charter, clubs commit to:
• Educating members on water sustainability.
• Improving irrigation infrastructure.
• Collaborating with water authorities.
• Sharing successful case studies.
• Highlighting environmental and community benefits.
• Developing a Water Resilience Plan.
• Publishing their efforts to inspire others.
Support for Clubs: Weekly Briefings
The UK Golf Federation and Environmental Solutions International are offering weekly briefings covering:
• Water audits and usage tracking.
• Smart irrigation (weather/soil-based controls).
• Climate-adjusted watering based on ET rates.
• Targeted irrigation areas and drought-tolerant grass.
• Alternative water sources like rainwater or stormwater.
• Water storage infrastructure and grants.
• Drought planning with clear communication to members.
• Future-proofing with sustainable drainage and long-term plans.
