Arabella invests in AI-powered weather station

High-tech weather system will monitor key environmental variables to enable closer control of irrigation requirements.

Arabella Golf Resort Mallorca has launched a pioneering AI-powered early warning weather system that monitors environmental conditions in real time.

SATGOLF technology enables the award-winning 63-hole resort to anticipate extreme weather events and optimise irrigation across its golf courses.

Co-financed by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme, the €150,000 subsidised investment reinforces Arabella Golf Resort Mallorca’s position as one of Europe’s most environmentally responsible golf destinations and leader in sustainable golf tourism.

The SATGOLF system integrates advanced climate sensors, smart cameras, artificial intelligence and predictive algorithms to monitor key environmental variables such as heavy rainfall, strong winds, lightning activity and soil moisture.

Bernat Llobera, Director of Golf at Arabella Golf Resort Mallorca, commented: “Implementing the new SATGOLF AI-powered technology represents a major step forward in how we manage and irrigate our golf courses. The real-time data on rainfall and soil humidity allows our greenkeeping team to plan and target irrigation, reducing water consumption while ensuring premium playing conditions.

“In addition to precise irrigation management, the SATGOLF system also allows for resource optimisation and generates public value by monitoring climate change and water stress on the island. By combining innovation with environmental stewardship, we’re not only improving course conditioning, we’re building a more resilient, climate-conscious golf destination.

“As the only golf resort on the island with GEO Certified status across all three of our championship courses, alongside ISO 14001 and EMAS accreditations, our goal is to lead by example and demonstrate how technology can help golf align with global sustainability targets.”

SATGOLF is the latest innovation in Arabella Golf Resort Mallorca’s Green Evolution strategy, a long-term sustainability programme focused on water management, energy consumption, environmental protection and responsible resource use, fully aligned with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals .

Across its 63-holes of golf and three clubhouses, Arabella Golf Resort Mallorca has already achieved:

  • 100% use of reclaimed and regenerated water for irrigation (reuse of 820,000 m³ of regenerated water in 2024)
  • Substitution of chemicals for organic phytosanitary products
  • Golf Son Muntaner was Europe’s first golf course to adopt Celebration Bermudagrass, a drought-tolerant turf that dramatically reduces water requirements while maintaining premium playability
  • Organic vegetable garden and production of sustainable, zero-kilometre “Na Capitana” products: almonds, olives, capers, honey, olive oil and gin
  • Extensive biodiversity initiatives, including on-site bee colonies, native tree planting and habitat conservation
  • Elimination of single-use plastic bottles, replaced with reverse osmosis water refill stations
  • Consumption of 100% green energy, exclusively from renewable sources
  • Installation of photovoltaic panels and electric car charging points at Golf Son Muntaner to generate clean energy
  • Use of 100% electric buggy fleet and hybrid machinery
  • Complimentary electric shuttle service connecting hotels and golf courses to reduce emissions across the resort
