The bell tolls at Douglas Park to celebrate 125th anniversaries

10.37am 17th November 2022 - Course Development

The bells – well, the bell – was ringing out at Douglas Park Golf Club in Scotland earlier this week, when the Glasgow-based venue unveiled a new piece of course furniture as part of its 125th anniversary.

The club has installed a brand new bell at its sixth hole which enables golfers on the tee that the green is clear on the 311-yard, par-4 hole. The bell was commissioned and given to the club by DM Hall, one of Scotland’s leading firms of chartered surveyors, which has enjoyed a long and close working relationship with the club, and is also celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2022.

The DM Hall Bell was rung for the first time by Alan Gordon, Senior Partner at the firm, and Iain Brodie, mens’ vice-captain, and a member at the club for more than 50 years.

Mr Gordon said: “DM Hall has had a mutually beneficial association with Douglas Park, having been involved in running Pro-Am tournaments there over some 32 years, attracting high-profile professionals. The par-69 course is a fascinating mixture of tricky woodland and rolling parkland and has given players 125 years of challenging sport since it opened under the captaincy of William Lyon in October 1897. We wanted to do something different and lasting to mark our joint celebrations and we think the bell will symbolise an enduring quality which is shared by both the firm and the club.”

Mr Brodie said: “This has been a splendid gesture by DM Hall which encapsulates the long-term relationship between the firm and the club. It is remarkable that, when Will Gibson of Bearsden proposed forming club in 1897, only 11 neighbours turned up. Now it is one of the most popular clubs in Scotland.”
