The renovated Ullna Golf Club, located in Stockholm, Sweden, was officially inaugurated in June after a complete renovation, overseen by Jack Nicklaus, that lasted almost two years.
Members were invited to play at the opening event on June 8 and their feedback on the redesign was very favourable.
The renovation has resulted in an altogether extraordinary golf course with many strategic challenges. The Nicklaus Design team, led by Senior Design Associate Dirk Bouts and shaper Jerame Miller, successfully integrated all important playability elements in the Ullna property.
A round of golf at Ullna is a scenic experience as 13 of the 18 golf holes play along or near Ullna Lake.
The June event at Ullna included a large gala dinner, where the audience, led by golf club Chairman John Landborn formally announced the reopening. Jack Nicklaus, who had other commitments, supported the event with a video message wishing the members good luck. In his message, the Golden Bear reflected on the strong commitment he made to his late friend Sven Tumba, who created the original Ullna Golf Club. “I’m convinced Sven would have appreciated the final result and hopefully he is with us right now,” Nicklaus said.
The renovation included all tees, fairways, bunkers, greens and green areas at all 18 holes, making the renovated course like new but with unchanged routing.
Ullna is a semi-private golf club located approximately 20 miles from Central Stockholm. The golf course was first opened in 1981 and very quickly earned a top-three position among Swedish golf courses.
Numerous professional and amateur championships have been staged at Ullna over the years, including tournaments on the European Tour. At the turn of the century, Ullna hosted several SAS Invitational events. Golf greats such as Seve Ballesteros, Johnny Miller, Craig Stadler, Lee Trevino, Bernhard Langer, Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie have all competed at Ullna Golf Club.
