Plans have been submitted to Woking Borough Council to build 650 houses on the land currently occupied by Sutton Green Golf Club in Surrey, which, if approved, would result in the permanent closure of the golf course.

The Woking-based club, whose 18-hole layout was designed by Dame Laura Davies and first opened in 1994, previously submitted plans in 2022 to redevelop the course into a retirement community featuring up to 200 houses and a 66-bed care home. The application was unsuccessful and was later withdrawn.

However, the new application plan, submitted by developers Quinn Estates last month, comprises 650 private homes, a care home, and a country park, alongside associated parking, infrastructure and commercial space.

If the application is approved, it would see golf course, clubhouse and all other club infrastructure demolished to make way for the development.

Planning assessors, acting on behalf of Quinn Estates, deemed the land on which the golf courses sits to be only ‘moderately’ or ‘weakly’ contributing to Green Belt purposes and therefore should be classified as Grey Belt, however this is widely contested by local residents in numerous objections raised in the planning section of Woking Brough Council’s website.

The public can submit comments on the application until March 13, after which time Woking Borough Council’s planning committee will begin the decision-making process.
