Sergio García Visits Torre Course as Opening Date Draws Closer

5.54pm 10th October 2024 - Course Development

Sergio García headed to Portugal earlier this month to visit Terras da Comporta and assess the progress of his much-anticipated project, the Torre Course, ahead of its grand opening next summer.

The Ryder Cup legend and 2017 Masters champion took time out from his busy playing schedule to meet with his design team and tour the site of the first major course he has held overall design responsibility for.

The Torre Course is set to transform Terras da Comporta into a 36-hole venue following the huge success of The Dunas Course, designed by David McLay-Kidd, which opened to critical acclaim in October 2023.

Alongside several key figures in the Portuguese golf industry, senior management personnel from Vanguard Properties – the developer that owns Terras da Comporta – were in attendance to see the latest updates and hear from García and his team.

García said: “It was incredibly exciting to see the progress that has been made since my last visit. Of course, we spent a lot of time visualising each hole, but nothing compares to seeing it in the flesh. The course is really starting to take shape and the whole team is itching to get out there and play it.

“Terras da Comporta is a unique destination in Portuguese golf, not only because of the stunning location but also thanks to the quality of The Dunas Course. When The Torre Course opens, I have no doubt that this will be one of the best 36-hole venues anywhere in Europe.”

García was inspired by Real Club Valderrama – which he cites as his favourite course in the world – when designing The Torre Course. The par-72 layout will feature generous fairways and small greens and will measure 6,575 metres from the back tees.

Rodrigo Ulrich, director of golf at Terras da Comporta, said: “It was great to welcome Sergio to tour the site again, and we’re more confident than ever that The Torre Course will be something very special when it is complete.

“We look forward to welcoming media and tour operators to preview the course next spring and, of course, opening for general play next summer.”

As well as two 18-hole golf courses, Terras da Comporta will boast a wide range of lifestyle and sporting facilities including tennis, padel, pickleball and horse riding. The development, which sits just one hour south of Lisbon, also includes an array of plots for hotels, tourist and residential condominiums.
