On Monday 22nd October construction is scheduled to begin at Sandford Springs Golf Club (www.sandfordsprings.co.uk) for a brand new hotel, due to open its doors in September 2013.
With 40 spacious twin rooms, a breakfast buffet area and a relaxation zone – this 3 star hotel at Sandford Springs will be a sophisticated addition to the Hampshire hotel scene.
The hotel will be overlooking the 11th green and 12th tee on The Wood course and will be less than 200 yards from the main clubhouse. The clubhouse will also see a major refurbishment including new changing rooms and kitchen.
Work is being carried out by Leadbitter Group and this development marks an exciting time for both staff and members at Sandford Springs. With an estimated 20 jobs being created, the new hotel will bring employment opportunities to the local community, and attract visitors from across the world at a time when the global golf tourism industry market is worth more than $17 billion annually (2011), according to IAGTO, The International Association of Golfing Tour Operators.
The new Sandford Springs hotel is the latest addition to the Leaderboard Golf Group owned by Paul Gibbons, founder of Auto Trader. In 2010 Gibbons opened The Oxfordshire Hotel & Golf Resort, a 50-bedroom state-of-art hotel near Thame. Last year the hotel at the Oxfordshire accommodated up to 17,000 guests, for both business and leisure purposes.
Sandford Springs Golf Club in the heart of Watership Down, Hampshire, is a 27-hole course designed by Hawtree & Son, offering a fabulous golfing challenge without the slog and distance of a championship course. The course comprises three very different 9 holes: The Lakes, The Park and The Wood.
Andrew Wild, General Manager of Sandford Springs, comments: “We are excited and cannot wait for the work to begin; it will be a valuable addition to our club as well as the local community. Throughout the building process we strive to incorporate environmentally responsible practices and have chosen an architectural design in keeping with the landscape in this most beautiful part of England.”
