Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, in the unspoiled Eastern Algarve region of Portugal and widely tipped in the media to become one of the world’s top leading golf destinations, has been named Troon Golf’s first Privà© Private Club of Distinction in Europe.
Troon’s Privà© clubs are amongst the most prestigious in the world and are renowned for having the finest playing conditions, extraordinary quality both on and off the course and unsurpassed personal service. With seasoned staff already in place, including general manager Thomas Rubi, who has nearly 20 years experience in the luxury hospitality industry, and director of golf Wayne Johnson, who spent four years as director of golf at The Montgomerie Dubai, Monte Rei is perfectly positioned to offer the ultimate in private golf club experiences.
Troon Golf is the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing, overseeing operations at more than 185 courses worldwide including The Westin Turnberry Resort and The Grove. “As a Troon Privà© Private Club of Distinction, Monte Rei Golf and Country Club will set the standard for exclusive clubs in the Iberian region,” stated Troon Golf managing director EMEA, Bruce Glasco.
Monte Rei will utilise Troon’s operational expertise particularly in the key area of agronomy where Monte Rei will collaborate with Troon’s award winning team to achieve the best possible course conditioning and visual appearance while maintaining turf health. Indeed Monte Rei’s new director of agronomy Francisco Blazquez Pacheco brings with him an impressive track record of delivering world class playing surfaces such as the excellent Capcana Resort, Dominican Republic and the multi-award winning Troon North, Arizona.
Thomas Rubi added, “I am certain that an agronomist of Francisco’s calibre is the perfect addition to our team that will produce playing conditions at Monte Rei that will be without comparison in Europe. I look forward to working with him and the Troon Golf team on achieving what we believe will be among the finest golf destinations in the world.”
Monte Rei officially opens for business next month and has already received critical acclaim from some of the world’s leading golf magazines as destined to become Iberia’s premier golf resort.
The golf course is surrounded by over 400 hectares of beautiful Algarve countryside, with wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean and a back drop of the dramatic Serra do Caldeirao Mountains. The Monte Rei experience captivates the natural charm of the picturesque East Algarve region and combines it with unrivalled quality both on and off the golf course – all this just 30 minutes east of Faro near the ancient fishing town of Tavira.
The first of two championship golf courses is a Jack Nicklaus Signature design meandering over 70 hectares of gently rolling hills and valleys. The fairways and greens are boarded by several lakes, indigenous plants, native grasses and trees adding drama to the landscape.
A wide range of properties nestle in a landscape carefully selected for privacy and designed to preserve the natural beauty of the area. The properties range from low density spacious luxury villa plots and residences situated in their own ‘O Miradouro’ Village to high specification terraced apartments overlooking the 18th hole. Over time the resort will also develop a luxury hotel and spa, shopping centre and beach club.
