Macdonald Hotels & Resorts is aiming to restore Portal Golf & Spa Resort‘s reputation as one of the leading golf hotels in the country with a £200,000 investment in a golf course renovation and maintenance programme over the winter months.
The long-term goal is to return the Cheshire venue’s Championship course to its status as a true championship layout. Having hosted the Junior Team Golf Home Nations Championships in October, the club has now embarked on a major programme of renovations that will enable the club to stage further elite level and professional tournaments in 2023 and beyond.
Key focus points of the golf course development on all three courses at Portal will include water feature re-development; green and fairway drainage and aeration projects, and specific tee and bunker restoration across the worst affected areas and footpath improvement.
Off the course, Portal aims to enhance the practice facilities, giving members and visitors the opportunity to warm up before teeing off, with an elevated triple-bay practice facility adjacent to the Championship course.
Portal aims to double the size of the greenkeeping team in comparison to last winter to ensure the resort has the resources to carry out the renovations expediently.
Ross Astley, Macdonald Hotels & Resorts’ Regional Director of Golf, said: “This is a pivotal time in Portal’s repositioning, giving the team the resources to execute and facilitate on the vision and fulfil the potential of being the leading golf resort in the North West of England. Having proved time and again that is can be a Championship venue, this investment will allow that to become a standard members and guest experience.”
Hotel General Manager Jan Coskun added: “This is a wonderful time for the resort as a whole as we continue to elevate our product and build on our reputation as the ultimate Cheshire retreat.”
