Infinitum re-opens Lakes Course following major renovation

12.22pm 10th September 2024 - Course Development

INFINITUM’s Lakes course has reopened following an €800,000 renovation project, elevating one of Spain’s most popular layouts ahead of hosting of the DP World Tour’s Qualifying School Final Stage in November.

At the heart of the project was a renovation and reimagining of the course’s bunkering, with the help of Greg Norman Design – the masterminds behind the original course design. As well as installing new drainage systems and replacing the sand, many bunkers have been moved into new strategic positions to make the Lakes course an even more engaging test for the player.

Throughout the process, INFINITUM also took the opportunity to install a new species of grass, Zoysia, around each bunker. Zoysia grass requires much less water and fewer chemicals than comparable species, and is significantly more resistant to foot traffic, representing another forward step in INFINITUM’s sustainability drive.

Tour professionals will not have to wait long to experience the new-look Lakes course, with DP World Tour Qualifying School Final Stage taking place from November 8-13 and the Denmark-based ECCO Tour coming to INFINITUM for the first time in September.

Joaquín Mora Bertrán, Deputy General Manager of Golf, Beach Club and F&B at INFINITUM, said: “The Lakes course renovation has been one of our top priorities for some time now and we are delighted with the outcome.

“The strategic elements of the course have changed considerably, making the Lakes a layout where you have to think about where to place the ball with each shot. This will obviously increase the challenge for our visiting tour professionals, but also offer a fresh and exciting experience for amateur players.”

The Lakes, designed by two-time Major winner Norman, opened alongside the rest of the resort in 2008 and has become a staple of European golf. Weaving through the picturesque Sèquia Major wetlands, the course’s heavy emphasis on water hazards make it a challenging round for even the most experienced golfers.

Meanwhile, the Hills course – which opened alongside the Lakes in 2008 – will undergo its own extensive renovation from December. Led by architect Dave Sampson, European Golf Design will completely remodel the course, with the back nine being refurbished from January-August 2025 and the front nine following from January–August 2026.

INFINITUM’s nine-hole course, the Ruins, will form part of a dynamic composite course with the Hills while refurbishment is underway.

The Hills course is to renovated by European Golf Design in two phases over the next two years
