Hunter Grinders delivers the cut for Royal Lytham & St Annes

Paul Smith - Royal Lytham and St. Annes P1000078Course Manager of Open Championship venue Royal Lytham & St Annes, Paul Smith knows how to produce a championship course and Paul chooses to have Hunter Precision Grinders in his workshop.

“We have used a Jupiter grinder for over ten years now and have consistently achieved the highest standard of cut,” said Paul. “Naturally when it came to renewing we looked at all the other options and tested what was on the market.  But with the latest developments on the Hunter machine – we felt it was still the best option for us.”

Paul exchanged his Jupiter for another Hunter Grinder www.huntergrinders.com. This time he purchased an ATI – the automatic in-situ version of the Jupiter. “Being automatic, the Jupiter ATI will allow us to set the grinder away working while we get on with other work,” said Paul. “What we are looking for is more of the same quality performance, and the Hunter always delivers.”

The Hunter Grinder ATI is proving popular with many golf course managers, particularly those looking to achieve outstanding finishes with their first spin and relief grinder.

Clubs including Middlesex based Crews Hill and Tandridge Golf Club in Surrey have recently followed the professional’s choice of grinder and selected the Jupiter ATI, along with councils such as South Somerset Council.

Ian Robson, Director of Lloyds/Hunters explains why Hunter grinders will always be right for any course and especially championship courses. “Our machines will spin and relief grind delivering the finest cut whichever method of grinding you choose.  You can adopt a programme of frequent spin grinding – although spun units go off cut faster than relief ground units, and you will require extra manpower to do the work. It also places additional stresses on the units.”

Professional greenkeepers and course managers tend to opt for relief grinding. With an accurate relief grinder you can be confident that you are returning the cylinders to the original manufacturer’s specification, which has to be the optimum level of sharpness.

Ian went on to say: “Most championship courses advocate a programme of relief grinding which reduces your grinding time considerably and utilises maintenance resources more efficiently than spin grinding alone.”
