First Palmer/Nicklaus collaboration opens this week

12.30am 13th November 2000 - Course Development

Palmer Course Design Company has announced that Arnold Palmer and Chief Operating Officer, Ed Seay will attend the grand opening ceremonies for The King and The Bear on Wednesday, 15th November 2000. The King and The Bear is the first collaborative design by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.

The King and The Bear, developed by Scratch Golf Company and recently purchased by Honours Golf, is located at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida. Set on 170 acres, the generous fairways are bound by lakes with water surrounding most of the 18 holes. The lakes are lined with large coquina rocks creating impressive vistas and the signature feature of the course.

Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus will be playing 18 holes of the 7,247-yard, par 72 course. Palmer said, “The King and The Bear was a total collaborative effort between Palmer Course Design Company and Nicklaus Design. The end result contains the best elements of our individual philosophies.”

Harrison Minchew, golf course architect for The King and The Bear project says, “The existing terrain at The King and The Bear dictated the design direction for this course; a traditional golf course (back nine) and an open links style golf course (front nine). Playing this course will be a fun, diverse experience.”
